Operation Vulcan: Chapter 2

Operation Vulcan: Chapter 2 is a team-based, in-person counter-espionage simulation that challenges students to collaborate, analyze intelligence in real time, and engage in live decision-making during the PG Cert AIO residency week. By integrating cyber intelligence, OSINT, and HUMINT-based elicitation via the Emotion Aware Conversational Simulator (EACS), the exercise provides a high-pressure, hands-on intelligence training experience, preparing students for operational roles in intelligence, security, and national defence.

Project Overview:

Operation Vulcan: Chapter 2 is a high-intensity, team-based counter-espionage simulation conducted during the residency week of the PG Cert in Applied Intelligence Operations. This in-person exercise builds on the skills developed in Operation Vulcan: Chapter 1, placing students into rotating intelligence roles as they collaborate to detect, analyze, and neutralize an evolving espionage threat.

Throughout the five-day immersive operation, students engage in live intelligence briefings, in-person discussions, and team-based problem-solving exercises, applying structured analytical techniques to real-time intelligence developments. The simulation integrates the Emotion Aware Conversational Simulator (EACS) (once completed), allowing students to conduct advanced intelligence interviews, detect deception, and refine intelligence elicitation skills as part of the operational process.

By combining cyber intelligence, OSINT analysis, and HUMINT-based interactions in a real-time team environment, Operation Vulcan: Chapter 2 replicates the pressure and complexity of live intelligence operations, ensuring students gain practical experience in decision-making, operational collaboration, and intelligence-led investigations.

Objectives:

  1. Enhance teamwork and role-based intelligence decision-making, ensuring students can operate effectively within multi-disciplinary intelligence teams.
  2. Develop hands-on operational intelligence skills by engaging in real-time analysis, intelligence reporting, and strategic briefing exercises.
  3. Apply structured analytical techniques in a live intelligence scenario, responding dynamically to unfolding espionage threats.
  4. Simulate real-world intelligence workflows, including tasking, prioritization, and intelligence fusion, to generate actionable intelligence.
  5. Utilize the Emotion Aware Conversational Simulator (EACS) to develop deception detection, intelligence elicitation, and strategic questioning skills.
  6. Improve cyber intelligence and OSINT analysis capabilities, integrating open-source intelligence with operational intelligence for real-time decision-making.
  7. Hone leadership and operational command skills, requiring students to justify intelligence actions, allocate resources, and manage intelligence teams.
  8. Strengthen intelligence communication skills, ensuring students can produce and deliver coherent, actionable intelligence briefings to senior decision-makers.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of Operation Vulcan: Chapter 2, students will be able to:

  1. Operate effectively within intelligence teams, demonstrating adaptability, role-based decision-making, and leadership in live counter-espionage operations.
  2. Analyze and synthesize intelligence data in real-time, integrating cyber intelligence, OSINT, and HUMINT insights to track and disrupt espionage threats.
  3. Apply structured analytical techniques in a fast-moving operational environment, responding dynamically to new intelligence developments.
  4. Develop high-level intelligence briefing skills, producing clear and actionable assessments for senior intelligence and security decision-makers.
  5. Utilize EACS for intelligence elicitation, refining their ability to detect deception, extract critical intelligence, and conduct effective strategic questioning.
  6. Enhance cybersecurity and digital forensics expertise, applying technical intelligence methods to counter cyber-enabled espionage threats.
  7. Demonstrate operational resilience and adaptability, navigating the challenges of intelligence tasking, prioritization, and real-time problem-solving.
  8. Understand the ethical and legal constraints of intelligence operations, ensuring compliance with intelligence best practices and security frameworks.
  9. Bridge academic knowledge with hands-on intelligence experience, preparing for real-world roles in counter-espionage, cyber intelligence, and national security.

Operation Vulcan: Chapter 2 is a cutting-edge, hands-on residency experience that replicates the complexity of live counter-espionage operations, giving students the opportunity to apply intelligence techniques in real-time, collaborate as a team, and refine their operational decision-making skills. By incorporating live discussions, intelligence briefings, and advanced conversational simulations (EACS), this immersive residency week bridges the gap between theory and practice, ensuring students develop the teamwork, leadership, and analytical capabilities required for modern intelligence roles.
